Speech Impediment
Speech Impediment
By Richard Vanlerberghe

I have a problem with words, my dear
They tend get jumbled at the mouth
And seem to flow a little quicker
With the help of a little liquor
But trust me, darling
These words will not wear out

My love,
Words are a funny thing
One moment they can mean nothing
Then turn around and sting
But I promise
For as much as words can hold truth
I’d write more than a sonnet just for you

But what are words without feeling
It’s like a bullet without a gun
The emotion is there
But there’s no force to make it run
To jump off the page from ink into rhythm
It’s a conundrum because it’s easier said than done

So with breath inhaled
The exhale begins
With an attempt for words to try and fit in
But just as every time before
They fall short
And shatter on the floor

Damn these teeth
And this twisted tongue
These lips, this brain
And these words yet unsung
When they can’t release
They rebound off my cheeks
To head back to the source
Where they remain for weeks

And when I do feel
Like I’m getting it right
I end up saying too much
And end up feeling contrite
And when there are so many words to use
They spill from my mouth around my neck
And hang me like a noose

So heaven forgive
For I know not what I do
I’d do anything to trade this tongue for a new
A used, maybe even none would do
Force the words from my skull to my fingers
Give the thoughts more time to linger
To filter, to keep the wrong ones out
To leave me with little to no doubt
That what I’m actually saying is true
For there are many ways to say I love you
