Ask Kayce: How do you spell the letter “W”?

How do you spell the letter “W”?

- Leneigh Brackney, sophomore

What a great question Leneigh! I have often wondered this myself. Not because I have ever needed to spell the letter “W”, but because I like to ask questions that no one else is asking.

Your first instinct is to say, “That’s easy Leneigh! You spell ‘W’ with the letter ‘W’.” Well, I beg to differ. We shouldn’t put the letter “W” in such a small box. It deserves a spelling outside of itself. Think about it! The letter “W” is the only letter in the alphabet that sounds completely different than the sound it makes in a word. Go ahead and say the alphabet to yourself. The letter “W” stands alone. Imagine if we said the letter “W” the way that it sounds in a word. It would ruin the flow of the alphabet song and we don’t want that. That song has come in handy for many years.

I think we have established the importance of giving the letter “W” a spelling. I attempted to look up the history of the letter “W”, but it was a lot of Greek and Latin mumbo jumbo and it would have taken me hours to truly understand it. So here are some suggestions on how to spell the letter “W”….

Double-you

I think I am leaning toward the second one. I hope this helps, Leneigh. It was an excellent question.
